Brigthin Star is indeed a rising star in the 3rd party lens category. They make very able lenses. Notably the 50mm F1.4 Auto Focus lens. Good optics and auto focus too. With a good pricing; this makes the whole package very attractive.
Today I would like to share my first impression of their new 50mm F0.95 lens. I think the most compelling part is the price. USD$199 for a F0.95 lens.

OK, let’s get straight to the point. Is this lens usable at F0.95? This depends on your expectations. Is it sharp? Not really. Let me explain. It’s rather acceptable to me. It’s soft and have some ghosting. And of course you need heap of patience to nail your focus at F0.95. A slight movement and your focus point is off. At the same time, that is the joy of using an ultra fast lens. At wide open there is vignetting. Once you stop down; all this is gone.
This lens shine best, if you stop down to F2; Its sharp. I enjoy best at F2. Here are 2 set of photos shot at F0.95 and F2. You could see the softness at F0.95 and how sharp it is when you stop down to F2.

The focus throw is just a quarter of a turn. Its buttery smooth and tension is good. This lens is very well build and has a small build-in lens hood. Which is a nice touch. Filter size is 62mm.
Weighting at 443 grams; I think this lens is on the heavier side. Minimum Focusing distant is 50cm. Which I think is good. Not just for portraits but also for some close up. Some barrel distortion is evident.
In conclusion; the other competition in this category also display similar result. I like the design of this lens and the price of USD$199. This lens command value. So if you are looking for one; I would recommend.
