When I was first handed the new Fujifilm XF56mm F1.2 Mark ll lens; the first think I notice, this lens does not have a linear motor (LM). Wow! I would think all future XF lenses will have LM as standard. Boy am I so wrong. At least it’s weather resistant (WR). Next, this lens has grew in size. The original XF56mm F1.2 has a diameter of 62mm. The mark ll has a diameterof 67mm. It’s also a little bit heavier. But I think this lens physically looks better than the original XF56mm.A very handsome looking lens. Is it any good?

I personally loves the second generation lenses from Fujifilm. Primary XF18mm, XF23mm and XF33mm. They are basically better piece of glass and has a faster AF capability. And this is no different for the new XF56mm F1.2. With a MFD of 50cm this lens becomes even more versatile.

Here is a non scientific comparison between the 3 top lenses in this category. What do you think? XF50mm F1.0 still hold the title for the best bokeh and character. I think the new XF56mm F1.2 Mk ll comes in 2nd. As the sharpness, I feel its sharper than XF50mm F1.0.

I feel many of us will have many questions. Are my old lenses able handle the new 40MP sensor? Or will new generation lenses works well with my older bodies? If you are still using older bodies; I think its fine,as the new generation lenses improves on the IQ as the glass is another level up. That is a plus point. If you are using a new 40MP X-H2, I think not all first generation lenses could fully harness the advantage of the new 40MP sensor. To have the maximum potential with the new X-H2 40MP sensor; here are the list of lenses
XF16mmF2.8 R WR
XF18mmF1.4 R LM WR
XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR
XF23mmF2 R WR
XF27mmF2.8 R WR
XF33mmF1.4 R LM WR
XF35mmF2 R WR
XF50mmF2 R WR
XF56mmF1.2 R WR
XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS MACRO
XF90mmF2 R LM WR
XF200mmF2 R LM OIS WR
XF8-16mmF2.8 R LM WR
XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR
XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR
XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR
XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR
XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R LM OIS WR
For example, the below photos are all taken with the new XF56mm F1.4 WR with a X-Pro3. Light with a Godox AD200 Pro. I feel from the photos, one could see the IQ is better than the first generation XF56mm. There are more pop and it’s a sharper lens. As for the AF, I could feel its much better.

The real joy is when I mount this lens with a X-H2 or X-H2s; the XF56mm’s AF perform at another level up. It’s so much quicker and certain. Lastly; I have only praises to say about this new XF56mm F1.2 lens. We have all waited long enough for the improved version of this lens. It’s now finally in the flesh and it will not disappoint.

For me the photos look more and more like Nikon or Sony with these new sharper lenses. Might be good for some but I’ll stick with my older lenses.
