Yongnuo 50mm F1.8 AF

The Yongnuo lens company. I have never heard of them until my good pal @alwinkok_ shared with me. Here is my quick 1st impression of the Yongnuo 50mm F1.8 Auto focus lens for X-mount.

It’s not a very big lens but when compared with its competitors it’s not small. Weighting at 387 grams it’s almost twice as heavy as XF50mm F2 WR lens. Just a tad brighter at F1.8. The other competitors are Sigma 56mm and Viltrox 56mm. Both are brighter lens at F1.4. Weighting at 280 grams and 290 grams respectively.

So what is it that I like about it? First obvious reason, it’s the price. At USD$265 it’s about 40% less expensive than XF50mm F2 WR and Sigma 56mm F1.4. Therefore I think its closest competition will be the the Viltrox 56mm F1.4, retailing at USD$325. About a 20% price premium vs Yongnuo. For USD$60 more would I go for the Viltrox 56mm F1.4? I would. Of course everyone has a budget. If you don’t wanna spend that extra $60; I think the Yongnuo 50mm F1.8 is an attractive option. Let me tell share.

My daughter really enjoy using the Yongnuo 50mm with her X-E4 ( Photo shot with XF56mm)

The Yongnuo doesn’t not have an aperture ring; but one is compensated with a cool LED aperture display. This is even more useful when one is working in dark environment. AF is quick enough. And it’s also quiet. It may be the cheapest lens among the AF lenses that I have mention above; but its biggest strength is it glass. Optically they are good. The bokeh transition is also very pleasant. If this is your first prime lens; you will not be disappointed.
