35mm Shoot Out.

There are no perfect lenses. Every lens has its place in the photographic world. There are pro and con. Each lens has its own strength and weaknesses. Anything from size, weight, design, WR or not, AF to manual, price and most importantly optical quality. Within this term we call optical quality, we will argue about sharpness. Is it too clinically sharp or it’s just about having the right degree of sharpness? Softness or some may call it character. I call it character flaws. What about bokeh? Too blurry, too messy etc….. The list goes on.

The good thing these days; we as Fujifanboys and Fujifangirls are spoilt for choice. Here are just 7 lenses that I have on my table. Of course there are many more native 35mm lens for X-mount.

Below are a sample of photos taken with X-H2. Every shot is SOOC and mounted on a tripod. Each shot is manually focus, even for both Fujifilm XF35mm F2 WR and the almost cult status and noisy XF35mm F1.4 R. Which was my very first XF lens together with X-Pro1. Which I still own; up to today.

Have a look at the comparison below, do let me know what you think? There are 2 sets of photos for each lens. First shot wide open base on their individual F-stop and the second shot is at F2.8 across all lenses. There is also a 100% and 200% zoom on the photos for a closer look.

Which lens do you like best?

Personally I will share my 3 fav lenses in this 7 lenses shoot-out. They are not in any order but these lenses speak to me and my style of shooting. First is XF35mm F1.4 R. I like this lens because of how it renders. It’s also the noisiest and doesn’t have WR. At F1.4 this is lens is pretty fast and also rather small. AF is slow but when paired with newer camera; one could feel the improvement. The next lens is TTartisan 35mm F1.4. At USD $79, this lens commands great value. Also a F1.4 lens but a manual lens. Optical at F1.4 it’s not the sharpest but very useable. This lens is tiny. The last lens is Voigtlander 35mm f2 macro Apo-Ultron. The downside for this lens is it price. It’s sharp at wide open. Very well built. Focusing is buttery smooth. I like the character of this lens; on par with XF35mm F1.4. I hope you find this little shoot-out useful.

  1. Great comparison. I had the first 7artisans and it was fun with unique bokeh, but hard to focus at f1.2. The Fuji 35 1.4 is a classic and the one lens I miss the most now I switched system.

I am impressed with the TTartisan, but hate the way it looks. I think I would rather save up a bit more and get the Sigma 30mm f1.4. I prefer the wider field if view too.
